Extra Virgin, Not Ordinary: New Trial Data Links High EVOO Intake to a 48% Lower Cardiovascular Risk
A new analysis of the PREDIMED trial, one of the largest and longest-running Mediterranean diet studies ever conducted, has just added a precise number to something Oliiv has always believed: not all olive oil is created equal. The distinction that matters
Extra virgin olive oil is simply olive juice — cold-pressed from fresh fruit, with nothing extracted or added. The PREDIMED follow-up found measurable reductions in stroke and peripheral artery disease among high extra-virgin consumers, alongside a smaller reduction in atrial fibrillation — outcomes far beyond the heart attack risk most people associate with olive oil. The American Heart Association has long recommended olive oil over butter and other saturated fats, but this level of detail — grade by grade, gram by gram — is new.
In the UK, the British Heart Foundation notes that swapping saturated fats for olive oil is linked to better cholesterol levels, and points to the Mediterranean pattern as one of the most consistently evidenced approaches to long-term heart health. The consistency across UK, US and European research is, itself, the story: this is no longer a Mediterranean folk remedy. Refined oils, heated or processed, rarely meet that bar. Fresh, cold-pressed oils, harvested early and handled carefully, often do.
